We live in a world where we are constantly under pressure to “get things done!” But what makes us “get things done”? What makes us act or not act? In last week’s episode, Shelley and Rowena discussed the book The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin.
The book offered an answer to this question: why do we act? And the answer is not is not the same for all of us. Depending on how you respond to outer and inner expectations, you’ll act or choose not to act. And that’ll put you into one of four groups: an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel.
Today on the Two Booked Up Podcast, we’re going to be talking about how knowing our tendencies has helped us as parents — and as human beings. As we do so, you’ll learn:
[02:39] How the four tendencies show up in family life
[08:21] The four tendencies in partnerships
[10:22] How the four tendencies influence parenting
[16:30] Knowing your kids' tendencies and playing to their strengths
[20:47] Why a (loose) schedule can be helpful, even for Rebels
[23:19] Appealing to all four tendencies
[26:13] Obliger rebellion
[31:59] Give people what they need, not what we would need
